Modvion has produced the first module for a full-scale commercial wind turbine tower. The tower will be the world’s tallest wind turbine tower made of wood, standing at 150 metres including the blades. It has taken two years of development on the product and to get the factory ready to produce modules of this size. Now it begins.

Developing production
In 2020 we built our first tower on the island of Björkö on the west coast of Sweden. The Björkö tower was a prototype at 30 metres tall, so the next step was to build at commercial scale. The focus since then has been to develop our production facility in order to produce modules for commercial wind turbines.
The production line has been designed with the flexibility to produce modules for towers up to 200 meters. From the moment the material enters the building all the way to machining and coating, Modvion has developed the manufacturing solution to produce the next generation of wind power towers. The robot cell is powered Kuka Quantec Prime robots, each programmed to machine each module to exact specifications. The accuracy of the robots is unique in the wood industry.

Tall towers, simple logistics
Why do we do this? Our modular system has been developed to enable cost-effective, tall towers for the wind power industry. By building taller towers the turbines reach stronger and more stable winds, that in turn can produce more energy per kilowatt hour. Currently it is expensive to build tall towers and there aren’t any cost-efficient options on the market. That is where Modvion’s patented, modular, solution should become the preferred choice. With the first module produced, we are one step closer.
The first in the world
Modvion is the first company making modular wooden wind turbine towers with a circular cross-section. Using the same shape as the vast majority of installed wind turbines means Modvion can enter the value chain easily, decreasing the threshold to reach the market fast. With that said, the production technology and patented design creates a product that is perhaps one of the strongest wooden structures ever created. Modvion drives the development in what is possible to do with engineered wood.
