WindEnergy Hamburg is the biggest gathering in the wind power industry, taking place biyearly at Hamburg’s conference centre. More than 1 400 international exhibitors showcased innovations and solutions from the onshore and offshore wind industry, with around 30 000 visitors from 90 countries. With everyone from the industry attending the event, Modvion took the opportunity to meet with our partners, collaborators and future customers.
Modvion was honoured to be invited to participate on a panel discussion at the Global Wind Energy Council’s Global Market Theatre, one of the biggest stages at the conference with seats for hundreds of people. The panel would discuss the issue of sustainability and with the theme of the conference being ’putting the climate first’ this was one of the hot topics. Modvion’s CEO, Otto Lundman, was joined by top industry experts – Sarah Erler, Communications Specialist at Vestas, Giovanni Tule, Head of Sustainability at Enel Green Power, and Maximillian Schnippering, team leader in Government and Sustainability at Siemens Gamesa.
The Big Issues: Sustainability
As a renewable energy source producing green electrons, the wind industry has long been praised for being sustainable, but nowadays expectations from external stakeholders (customers, authorities, politicians and so on) are increasing – it is no longer acceptable to “just” produce clean energy.
As an industry, wind must also be truly sustainable. This means that the industry is expected to act in a socially and environmentally responsible way by keeping its carbon footprint and environmental impacts to a minimum, use the best available technology, create little to no waste and work in sustainable supply chains.
