The world’s tallest wooden structure and the most environmentally friendly source of energy can be the result of the letter of intent that has been signed between Varberg Energi and Modvion. Varberg Energi intends to buy Modvion’s first commercial scale wind turbine tower, 150 m in total height with a 110 m high, modular tower made of laminated wood.
– Varberg Energi has been pioneers in both wind and solar energy. Sustainability and innovation are important to us, of course we want to contribute to the market demonstration of Modvion’s modular towers made of renewable laminated wood. Modvion’s towers enable construction of cost-efficient high wind turbine towers – a key to reach a carbon-neutral energy system, says Björn Sjöström, CEO of Varberg Energi AB.
– Steel and concrete are good materials when used in right place, but laminated wood make our towers equally strong with a lower total weight. Modular Modvion towers enable logistic solutions for significantly higher wind turbines towers and the wood capture and store enough CO2 to make to wind energy climate positive from the start. We are proud to cooperate with Varberg Energi which previously shown leadership towards energy system of the future, says Otto Lundman, CEO of Modvion AB.
The companies started the cooperation in the summer of 2019 and the wind turbine is expected to be installed at earliest 2021.
Modvion develops demanding structures in laminated wood, nature’s own carbon fiber for large-scale construction. This enables radical reductions in emissions for constructions by replacing high emission materials such as steel and concrete. Modvion enable cost-efficient solutions for wind energy through modular wind turbine towers in laminated wood. The modularity enable higher wind power plants, major weight reduction as well as zero emissions. Modvion was founded in 2016 and is a part of Chalmers Ventures.
Varberg Energi is an energy and IT group owned by Varberg municipality through Varberg Stadshus AB. Today the company have more than 115 employees and an annual turnover of 800 million SEK. Varberg Energi wants to take part of future’s energy and IT challenges. We continuously work for a more creative everyday life and long-term improvements for our customers. Our focus on the environment is reflected in everything we do. The district heat we produce comes from residual heat and biofuels. We invest in our own wind, hydro and solar power plants and the electricity we sell under the name VIVA is fully renewable. We offer smart energy solutions for a sustainable future and we build fiber networks for cities. We are also the only energy company in Sweden verified according to ISO 26000, the standard for social sustainability. We have been climate positive for many years and will be completely fossil-free in 2021.
