Being among the top three for four consecutive years highlights their strong commitment to sustainability, and we are proud to contribute with our carbon-negative wind turbine towers – making one of the most sustainable companies in the world even more sustainable.
Tall Towers, Minus the Carbon Emissions
Modvion provides tall wind turbine towers, minus the carbon emissions. Our laminated veneer lumber (LVL) towers offer a strong, and climate-friendly alternative to the steel and concrete-heavy alternatives. This innovative technology caught Vestas’ attention, leading to an investment from Vestas Ventures in 2021.
In the 2024 Annual Report, Vestas writes:
Piloting wooden tower technology alternative to steel
In 2021, Vestas invested in Modvion, a company specialising in modular sustainable wind turbine towers made from laminated veneer lumber (LVL). LVL is a low-carbon material sourced sustainably, offering significant carbon emission reductions compared to steel or concrete towers, as wood stores carbon when trees grow. Thus, more emissions are stored in the tower than emitted during the production process.
Vestas aims to support Modvion’s scale-up strategy and integrate LVL towers into our design and manufacturing processes. This collaboration will help Vestas offer sustainable, cost-competitive solutions, enhancing transportation ease and providing cost-effective tall towers.
